The risk of using a phone while charging with a power bank is very small but there is always a risk that something might go wrong. Ultimately it is your choice and how much risk you are comfortable with. In practical terms, accidents or things going wrong are extremely rare and far apart, but they do happen. Most times when people use a battery bank is in between using the mobile, you are going to do something else and you plug it to a power bank to charge while you are away doing something else.

Saying that, use your common sense and buy a good power bank in the first place. Some of the cheap power banks in the market can or will miss features like over-current protection, overcharge protection, short circuit protection, over discharge protection, or high-temperature protection. These should be standard with any power bank these days. Furthermore, by getting a quality product, you won’t have to watch your phone as it approaches 100%, or even worry whether it’s safe to leave a phone charging for too long or even using it while charging.

Your phone will suffer the most though. Constantly using your phone while it is charging can wear down its components over time. If you ever use your phone while it was being charged, then you might notice that your phone gets very hot. This is dangerous for the battery inside. If your phone gets hot for any reason, stop using it immediately. It can damage your phone and worst-case scenario, explode (trust me, it has happened). You can find out from your manufacturer’s user manual what they say about overheating but, generally speaking, overheating phones is not a good thing.
