Huawei Honor Band 5 Review

The Cheapest Wearable

Unlike other tracker brands that focus on the design and specifications, Huawei focuses on delivering the cheapest one possible. In its price range, this gives its competitors something to keep an eye on. With less than half the price of the cheapest Fitbit, Honor Band 5 can dominate the market in no time, proving that a good fitness tracker doesn’t need to cost much.

Huawei started the year by releasing their Band 3 Pro to cup tie with Fitbit Inspire HR. This gives customers the opportunity to enjoy the same features at a very affordable price of £80. Now, they are introducing yet another band with even cheaper and better features.

In a Nutshell

For amateur runners, the basic step counter, heart-rate monitoring, and notifications are enough to keep track of their workouts. Advances features of a smartwatch are not really necessary. Good thing that the Honor Band 5 has all the basics that they can enjoy with just a little money to spend.
The Honor Band 5 is made to compete against Fitbit Inspire HR, but with the large gap in pricing, that seems impossible. For the price, the only rival that I could think of is the Xiaomi Mi Band 3. And if you want tracker bands with GPS in this price range, try the Amazfit Bip smartwatch.

Its Design

It’s impressive how the Honor Band 5 look closely the same as the Huawei Band 3 Pro. Well, it’s no accident because they made sure to imitate the design and style while keeping the cost down. The only difference I have observed is that the frame surrounding the screen in Band 5 is a 2.5D curved glass, while it’s metal in Band 3 Pro.

Even if it’s cheap, it’s a pretty attractive device that looks better knowing its original price. The all-black background theme of this band makes a 0.95 in OLED, 282 PPI touchscreen brings everything to life. Just a quick tap on the touch panel beneath and you are good to go.

Performance

Let’s take a look at how Honor Band 5 masters the basics. To control the tracking band, just lift your arm or tap the below panel, then swipe down to access the heart-rate, sleep time, stopwatch, timer, and so on. You can also set it up and twist your wrist to be able to navigate but still, you need to confirm the action through the screen, so it’s a bit useless. If you are an observant type of person and decide to use two different trackers, just for comparison, sometimes there’s a difference when it comes to stepping counting or the scores it shows. But then, don’t think that there’s something wrong with the tracker because honestly, it’s not a big deal. What matters is that it is consistent in giving you the right track every day which helps you for motivation.

Most people prefer having GPS on their tracker for distance accuracy. The Honor Band 5 tracking band can outsource data to your phone if you have a reliable GPS chip. But don’t get too fond about GPS because even pro running watches with built-in GPS are known to be inaccurate.

Also, there are other features of Band 5 that we can look forward to like the heart-rate tracking that constantly taking readings even if it switched off. You can put it in “smart mode”, to automatically notify you when there are irregularities, which are really remarkable. Same with sleep tracking, it tracks the accelerometer to record movements even if it’s turned off.

Verdict

If you think about it, what you will get in this under $30 device is a sleek AMOLED display, SpO2 tracker, and sleeping tracker programs. Sounds great right? Yeah, it got no GPS, so?
