Thanks to advancements in Bluetooth (thanks, aptX), the latest batch of wireless headphones not only stay connected in every situation, but they sound just as good as they’re wired counterparts to boot. There are over-ear wireless headphones, often with noise-cancelling thrown in for good measure, with major brands including Bose, Sennheiser and Sony leading the way.

There is no doubt that they are pricier than a traditional wired model, but wireless headphones give you much greater freedom of movement, making them perfect for working out at the gym, going out for a run or a great companion for phones like the iPhone X and Google Pixel 2 that simply lack a 3.5mm aux port to connect with.

Whether you’re a fan or not, the Beats brand is undeniably cool and trendy. Although at this price we’re accustomed to materials like metal, the Solo 3 Wireless stick to a plastic build. It doesn’t feel as premium compared to rival brands but does mean they are lightweight and durable – it’s somewhat astonishing how much you can bend and twist the headband with no sign of breaking.

You’ll probably spend quite a while choosing a colour as the Solo 3 Wireless come in no less than 14 different options. Some are black in colour, while others have a two-tone approach. So far we’re pretty impressed as long as you don’t mind the plastic design. Our only real complaint is that, despite the soft cushions, the headphones get a little uncomfortable after a while due to the inwards pressure.

Before we get to sound quality, there are various features that the Solo 3 Wireless offer that helps to justify the price. For starters, the headphones have Apple’s W1 chip which means easy pairing. We found this to be the case when listening to music genres like folk where individual instruments and vocals are integral. You will get somewhat used to how they sound for various genres over time, but compare them to some other decent headphones and you’ll realise what you’re missing out on.

The Bose SoundSport Wireless headphones are aimed, in fact, at sporty types: anyone who may be keen on keeping fit but for whom the drudgery of the treadmill or rowing machine is just too much to bear. As such, they’re Bluetooth wireless headphones, lightweight and colourful, with a built-in battery, a microphone for making and taking calls, and remote control built in. They’re sweat- and splash-proof and they sound pretty sweet, too.

So what do the Bose SoundSport Wireless Headphones offer that the competition doesn’t? On paper, at least, the answer to that question seems to be “not a lot”. Battery life isn’t exceptional at a claimed “up to six hours”. They’re sweat-proof, but not IP-rated. And there are only three pairs of ear tips supplied in the box, so it’s possible you won’t find a snug fit.

That’s not to say these are a poor pair of headphones, though; far from it. If they fit your ears, and their popularity indicates they will to most people, you’ll find them a comfortable, secure fit. They sit on the outside of the ear canal rather than slipping in all the way like most earphones, allowing you to hear some of what’s going on around you instead of being sealed off from the outside world. Each “umbrella” tip is kitted out with rubber wings that hook into the outer part of your ear, locking them in place when you rotate the earpiece.

The neck cable is just the right length: not too short and not so long that it snags on your shirt collar. And, although the earpiece housings protrude around a centimetre out from the ear (a touch further than I’d like), they never felt like they’d fall out and they aren’t too heavy. They are a savvy design. The remote barely weighs anything, leaving nothing to drag the cable down, and they are comfortable to wear. The soft silicone rubber hooks trace the basic lines of the ear, making the fit secure enough for running or going to the gym.

The Bose SoundSport Wireless Headphones are the more conventional siblings of the SoundSport Pulse. They lose heart-rate tracking but keep everything else. They are comfortable, sound great, are easy to use and don’t cost more than their high-quality rivals.
