LG’s previous OLED TV was already a hit, and this new model comes with even greater features. The LG C9 OLED 4K TV offers outstanding picture quality, supreme contrast and top motion handling. It also has Smart TV features, HDMI 2.1, and great response time.
Overview
Some of the best TVs that you can buy in stores today are Organic Light-Emitting Diode (OLED). OLED provides stylish looks along with great performance due to its powerful technology rendering great contrast ratio and a wide color spectrum. OLED TVs tend to be rather expensive but LG has managed to create a spectacular 4K TV on the lower end of the spectrum.
C9 is LG’s most attractive all-round OLED TV in the market today. From the design down to the price, this is the most affordable LG TV that provides the latest picture processor from LG, Alpha 9 Generation 2. The stellar picture the TV set renders along with an excellent operating system inside operating the TV, makes the LG C9 one of the best TVs that we have tested.
The C9’s stunning and vibrant colors won’t fade away with time and you will always have a gorgeous crisp and sharp image. It also has HMDI 2.1 ports to connect your PlayStation 5 or Xbox Series X (should you wish), to give you the best gaming experience of your life.
Design
The 65-inch LG OLED65c9 is undeniably beautiful, as well as the smaller 55-in OLED55C9, and 77-inch OLED77C9. Unlike LCD screens, OLED TVs have overly thin rear with a metallic polished finish, as well as the TV stand, which gives an elegant look. The frame around the screen is also narrow making it easier to focus on the TV screen’s amazing pictures.
To make the C9 its top-of-the-class, LG uses the latest webOS platform which is filled with premium apps. One of these is the Freeview Play, which combines all your favorite shows and digital streaming platforms such as YouTube, Netflix, and many more. LG has set the bar for the TV operating system and continues to improve looking into the future.
Onscreen menus are very clear, lively, and can be customized easily. The TV has a special remote that is cut above the rest. It has a wheel in the middle for scrolling up and down when browsing the menus that make the process very easy. Although there will be a few misses at the start until one gets used to the remote, it has all the normal navigation buttons you need to operate the TV. You’ll feel at home in no time.
Features
The new Alpha 9 Generation 2 processor provides high dynamic range (HDR) images that spectacularly enhance the color for a more dynamic and bright picture. The sharpness, detail level, and motion handling have improved from previous models, especially when the TV is upscaling sub-4K sources. The process is done superbly and one is left wondering, how on earth are they able to do that? The new processor also positively affects the sound quality through AI Sound. Even if the signal received isn’t Dolby Atmos, the LG C9 has the AI Sound mode that will recreate a similar, envelope effect, especially with the Sound Tuning on, which helps you customize the audio to your room’s characteristics.
All being said, let’s not forget the LG C9 OLED 4K TV has built-in Dolby Atmos, for extra clarity, crisp and comprehensive audio and special effects. In addition to that, and to add more scene by scene information as well as accurate color to HDR picture, LG includes Dolby Vision HDR support. The LG C9 OLED 4K TV can also manage the HLG HDR format that is usually used for live HDR streaming.
This next feature is made especially for gamers out there. Good news for you because all four HDMI ports are full bandwidth 2.1. What this means is that this feature makes all next generations’ games consoles compatible with the LG C9. It includes variable refresh rates, low latency mode automatic switching, and playing games in 4K that is up to 120 fps.
Picture Performance
Thanks to LG C9’s powerful processor and with a little bit of tweaking, the sharpness and details that you get will blow you away. Its TruMotion lessens the vibration as long as you stay in the lowest power setting. And the result is a cleaner, clearer, and full picture quality.
Compared to LG’s Cinema and Cine Home picture presets, C9’s extra brightness looks better. This can be really confusing when watching a movie as you would expect those settings to be the best but in our opinion, the best is to stick to the standard-setting. The colors look richer, vibrant, and consistent across the screen. And there will be no problem for gamers because this TV has only 13ms of input lag which is as low as you can get on any TV today, so this will put a cheeky grin on your face.
In terms of full brightness, LG C9 can be seen as lacking or limited compared high-end LCD TV. The LG C9 can only reach around 820 nits of light but the black levels, on the other hand, are really good and not even the Samsung Q90R can’t quite compare to in quality. This somewhat compensates but overall, the LG C9 produces very good brightness levels and for 99% people out there, more than enough.
Sound Performance
When it comes to C9’s sound quality, we can fairly say it is good but could be better. The Dolby Atmos mode will give you depth, body and dynamism, while voices are projected sharp and crisp. It is a rather surprisingly atmospheric sound coming out from built-in speaker of a TV. However, if you want to really enjoy high-end sound, you will need to add a soundbar to it, simply because a soundbar’s purpose is just to provide kick-ass sound. Check out our range of reviewed soundbars that will surely whet your appetite.
If you don’t have a Dolby Atmos signal, you will have to switch to AI Sound mode, which gives a different experience as it produces aggressive, dynamic, and intense sound. AI Sound also creates more bass that fills the room. Given the fact that most content is not Dolby Atmos, we wish that AI sound would have been the default setting for LG C9 OLED TV rather than the Dolby Atmos. But overall, we must say, the built-in speakers produce a sound quality that is truly impressive.
Verdict
The LG C9 OLED 4K TV pushes the envelope in terms of how much performance you can squeeze out of an OLED TV but LG has done an amazing job that exceeded our expectations. It brings outstanding picture quality with a super smooth OS and elegant design. On top of that, there has been a big improvement in sound quality, which you can still amp up using a soundbar or home theatre system.
And of course, the full-bandwidth HDMI 2.1 that is perfect for 4K at 120HZ, VRR, and eARC. As for the smart features, they are nothing new or that need an upgrade in the future to solve a problem. The TV works reliably and consistently, a TV you can grow with for years to come.
