Kinsa Smart Thermometer for Fever

The Kinsa QuickCare smart thermometer is a small, flexible thermometer that connects to the Kinsa app on your smartphone via Bluetooth. It can be used for oral, underarm, or rectal use which means, whatever the situation, you have a reliable thermometer. The tip is called the ‘comfort tip’ and it can be used with standard probe covers. One thing that is really cool is that the Kinsa QuickCare smart thermometer has a bubble game on the app which helps to keep your baby’s mind busy while a reading is being taken. Many parents will know how difficult it is to keep a baby still for any amount of time, let alone if they have a temperature. Your child will love the Sesame Street design in the App that soothes them when they are sick.

The Kinsa QuickCare smart thermometer will get an accurate temperature within about 8 seconds. The product has been FDA cleared and gives parents a real-time walk-through via the app about the next steps in medical care that should be taken in case of fever. The Kinsa QuickCare smart thermometer is packaged with a travel pouch, which is actually a nice touch, and instructions for use.

User Experience

The Kinsa QuickCare smart thermometer has a very simple design compared to previous versions. The probe itself extends away from a convenient round display, which is slightly bigger than a quarter, allowing for easy holding. The power button is located at the end of the display, which makes it a little hard to press in, but nothing you can’t manage with a little practice. Unfortunately, the Kinsa QuickCare smart thermometer doesn’t supply you with rechargeable batteries so you will need to have some CR2032 coin-style battery yourself. Some might find this annoying but you can understand why, as these thermometers might be in storage for a long time before being purchased and battery cells can die if it is not recharged within a certain amount of time.

Once you have connected the Kinsa QuickCare smart thermometer to the app, you only have to turn the QuickCare thermometer on and you are ready to go. It will automatically search and connect to the app and once it has given you a reading, it will turn itself off in around 10 seconds (unless used again), enough time to see the result. You do have the option of turning the Kinsa QuickCare smart thermometer off manually by pressing and holding the power button for about 2 seconds. Furthermore, you have the option to take a temperature reading and upload it into the app later on, too. This is helpful as the temperature reading will be stored on the device and the next time your app is opened, it will register as a stored temperature, allowing you to keep track of raising or lowering temperatures, should you need to. It has been clinically tested to guarantee you accurate readings that you can rely on.

The App

The app is in our opinion, great and a great resource for any parent. It stores your temperature readings for review at a later time and in addition to that, it also gives you a vast amount of information within the app itself to help treat symptoms you or your baby might be experiencing. The app is very much geared towards infants and babies. A lot of the information and advice you get is based around medical terminology related to infants. Setting up the app itself is a quick 1-2-3 if you get the Kinsa app as soon as you take the box out of your bag! The app will let you select where you’d like to take your child’s temperature (oral, rectal, underarm). The App keeps individual’s profiles separately making it easy for you to use on different members of your family.

Underarm Readings
  • Wipe armpit with a dry towel and make sure that no clothes are in the way. Place the thermometer probe in the armpit and keep your arm pressed firmly against the body.
    In general, a normal underarm temperature is considered 96.5°F – 98.9°F (35.8°C – 37.2°C)
Also, please note that underarm readings are typically 1°F lower than oral readings; this is perfectly normal. The Kinsa app automatically takes underarm readings into account when calculating the severity of the fever, but it does not artificially add that 1°F to the temperature reading.
  • Underarm Readings
  • Wipe armpit with a dry towel and make sure that no clothes are in the way. Place the thermometer probe in the armpit and keep your arm pressed firmly against the body.
  • In general, a normal underarm temperature is considered 96.5°F – 98.9°F (35.8°C – 37.2°C).

Rectal Readings
  • Consider applying a bit of petroleum jelly on the QuickCare tip to make it easier to insert.
  • Place your baby on a firm surface, either on her stomach or back, with legs lifted up to the chest (think diaper-changing position).
  • Insert the probe tip about ½ inch. Never insert the probe past the metal tip. Stop if you meet any resistance.
  • Hold QuickCare between two fingers while keeping your hand cupped around baby’s bottom (you might need to squeeze the cheeks together to hold it in place).
  • Remember, rectal temperatures tend to be about ½ a degree higher than oral and 1 degree higher than underarm readings.
  • In general, a normal rectal temperature is considered 97.5°F – 100.3°F (36.4°C – 37.9°C).
  • If you’d like to verify your result, be sure to wait 5 minutes first for the most accurate second reading.
Oral Readings
  • For oral readings, always place the probe tip of the thermometer in your mouth’s heat pocket – under the tongue at the back of the mouth. The temperature in one spot of the mouth can be very different from another so always put the probe tip in the same heat pocket for every reading.
  • Keep the mouth closed while the temperature reading is being taken.
  • A normal oral temperature is considered 97.0°F – 99.9°F (36.1°C – 37.7°C).
Safe, Accurate & Reliable
  • Kinsa thermometers have been extensively tested and cleared by the FDA and they meet ASTM and ISO standards for professional accuracy*.
  • Important Tips for All Temperature Readings:
  • Always wait for three flashing lines on the display before every reading.
  • Wait at least 15 minutes to take a reading after eating, drinking, exercising or bathing.
  • If you or your Kinsa were outside on a cold day, wait until you are used to the new temperature before taking a reading.
  • A person’s body temperature will fluctuate depending on the time of the day. The best method to determine your own normal temperature is to record it twice a day (early morning and late afternoon) when feeling well. The average of the two is considered your normal body temperature.
Conclusion

QuickCare is the best option for a smart thermometer in the market today. It’s very easy to use, the app is clean and includes a lot of reference materials, and it serves many purposes. The Kinsa QuickCare smart thermometer is a huge jump in evolution for their thermometer product line.
